Blood oranges are finally in season! With summer still out of reach, I thought it would be appropriate to mix up a brightly colored, remind-you-that-snow-is-not-permanent simple syrup. Both tart and sweet, this blood orange lime simple syrup is the BEST for summer cocktails and just diluting with cold water and ice.

Flavored simple syrups are the pinnacle of recipe efficiency, at least according to me. You get both the sweetening and flavoring done in one shot. This blood orange & lime simple syrup adds the perfect zip to your favorite liquor, and is just as refreshing diluted with a little water to make limeade.

Make sure you toss the zest of a couple limes in with everything before you add the juice and sugar to the heat. Allowing it to simmer in the syrup as it cooks draws out that tart lime flavor. After you remove it from the heat, let it steep right in the saucepan until the bottom is cool to the touch.

I found a nice balance with 1/4 cup syrup to 8 oz cold water when making limeade. Or, you can make a bigger size pitcher with 8 cups of water and the entire batch of syrup. Add to mix drinks as desired.

Description

Tangy and delicious, this blood orange lime simple syrup is the perfect sweetener.


Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup blood orange juice, freshly squeezed (about 3 small oranges)
  • zest and juice from 2 large limes (juice should be roughly 1/4 cup)

Instructions

To make the simple syrup

  1. Combine the sugar, juices and zest in a small saucepan. Heat over medium until the syrup comes to a simmer and the sugar has dissolved, stirring occasionally. Remove from the heat and allow to steep until the saucepan is cool to the touch on the bottom. Strain the zest from the syrup, using the back of a spoon to press as much juice from the zest as you can. Discard the zest.
  2. Store in a sealed container or jar. Syrup will last for a few months in the fridge.
