Is it Friday yet? Almost. And if your week has been anything like ours, then a good mixer sounds like the perfect cap. Speaking of Fridays, a Wisconsin tradition that’s nearly as big as the fish fry is the old fashioned cocktail.

Despite it first appearing in Louisville, KY – it’s a huge staple at supper clubs all over the dairy state. While traditionally mixed with Korbel brandy, substituting a double shot of SoCo makes this classic cocktail the perfect precursor to everything from fried perch to a burger.

This vs. That

As with most mix drinks, your preferences will dictate a lot of what you add and even more of what you don’t. Want to use brandy? Only have aromatic bitters instead of orange ones? Don’t like simple syrup? That’s fine! There’s actually two official ways to make the old fashioned. If you prefer it sweet, you top off the alcohol and bitters with a white soda, like Sprite, 7 UP, or Sierra Mist. If you want it sour, then grapefruit soda is used, like Squirt or 50/50. You can also use plain water, if soda isn’t your thing.
